Government Publishes UK Solar Roadmap: Major Growth Opportunities for Solar Supply Chain & Installers
London, 1st July 2025: The UK Government has published its long-awaited Solar Roadmap, setting out a clear ambition to triple installed solar capacity to 50GW by 2035 – creating major opportunities across the solar sector.
Currently the UK has around 15GW of installed solar, split between large-scale solar farms and over 1.4 million rooftop solar installations. The new roadmap outlines how Government, industry, and consumers can drive rapid expansion in both domestic and commercial solar PV.
Key highlights for the UK solar industry:
> 50GW target by 2035 confirmed, with Government projecting continued growth beyond this date towards Net Zero by 2050.
> The roadmap anticipates significant increases in rooftop solar, particularly on commercial and industrial buildings, alongside large ground-mounted arrays.
> Battery energy storage is a critical enabler, with integrated solar-plus-storage systems expected to become the norm for households and businesses, reducing payback periods and strengthening grid resilience.
> VAT relief continues: Domestic installations of solar panels and battery storage systems remain at 0% VAT until March 2027, supporting demand from homeowners.
> No new direct grants for households, but schemes like ECO4, the Home Upgrade Grant, and Home Energy Scotland grants/loans continue to support installations for low-income and off-gas-grid households.
> The Government pledges to work with the sector on:
o Streamlining grid connections for faster deployment.
o Skills training to address installer shortages.
o Ensuring planning policy supports rooftop solar across homes, public buildings, and commercial premises.
Energy Security Secretary Claire Coutinho emphasised solar as a cornerstone of Britain’s future energy mix, cutting reliance on imported gas and reducing bills.
For wholesalers, distributors, and manufacturers, the roadmap indicates sustained growth in demand for:
o High-efficiency PV panels and inverters for rooftops and large-scale projects.
o Battery energy storage systems (BESS) integrated with residential and commercial solar.
o Solar Power optimisers and smart energy management solutions to maximise system performance and export value.
Installers can expect increasing household enquiries as payback times shorten (currently 7-10 years for typical domestic systems) and businesses seek rooftop installations to cut energy costs and carbon footprints.
The Government also reaffirms its support for solar as a low-cost, reliable technology critical to decarbonising power.
